Depending on the situation, four months can be a very short period of time, or a very long one. For organizations that have had 501(c)(4) applications pending for more than four months, things may move a little faster, due to an expedited process announced recently by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
The option affects applications from organizations whose activities involve possible political campaign intervention or issue advocacy, and that as of May 28, have been waiting more than 120 days for a decision on their applications. The IRS Exempt Organizations Division has issued a memo that provides interim guidance on (c)(4) applications.
