Strategic, Smart and Wonderfully Human—
Right from the Start.

Financial expertise, sophistication and a wonderfully human experience? That’s MCB. Clients and employees alike love it here. As a people-centric Firm, we serve one another and invest in our people—our family—who are the heart of our Firm. We spend time getting to know each other, and our diversity and work-life balance make us stronger. We face challenges and find solutions together, share in social events and make a difference side-by-side in community service activities. We are now celebrating 75 very independent years of a great culture.

What makes us so special is that at the heart of MCB is a family, where everyone is cared for and valued. We hold tight to this tenet for both our practice and our clients. We call it “The MCB Experience” — personalized service, responsiveness and accessibility all graciously offered with knowledge, skill and warmth. Our Principals are approachable, flexible and hands-on. We’ve been this way for decades, and we’re unwavering in our commitment to doing the right thing always.

Ask our clients, and they’ll say we’re very adept at solving financial complexities. We’re also strong partners welcoming, smart and wonderfully human.

When founder and CPA Paul Matthews opened his doors on Vermont Avenue in 1947, it was a very different world. The Pentagon was the largest office building in the world, and the average cost of bread was 13 cents a loaf. The World Series was televised for the first time, and new inventions included the Polaroid instant camera, tubeless tire and first mobile phone.

As the Firm grew, Paul took on partners. In 1968, the Firm became officially known as Matthews, Carter & Boyce with the addition of Frank Carter and Tom Boyce as Principals. A great foundation had been established—a Firm of smart people who loved to help people. That premise is still alive and well at MCB today. And, the Firm has continued to evolve over the last seven decades, honing its expertise to meet the expanding needs of its clients.

Standing the Test of Time

Although much has changed in the Washington, DC, metro area since 1968, MCB has remained largely the same, with the same mindset and values. The business community has evolved, and MCB has also grown and adapted to market demands, developing expertise in real estate, nonprofits, government contracting, hospitality, closely-held businesses and other emerging niches.

“At the core of MCB is a dedication to the highest level of service to people—whether it be our clients or our employees. Of course, our clients will say we’re also very adept at solving financial complexities. More importantly, we’re strong business partners.”
Jude Covas, Managing Principal

This philosophy is the reason MCB is so proud to have numerous multi-generational clients. It’s been through these long-standing and prolific relationships that we have developed sophisticated client niches, from the highly-skilled investment company (SBIA) practice and our tax practice, which serves businesses and high net worth individuals across all industries with complex financial structuring, tax planning and compliance.

An Award-Winning Firm

We’re proud to be recognized as one of Accounting Today’s 2023 Best Accounting Firms to Work for. This is our 8th year making the list. Each year, Accounting Today recognizes the 100 Best Firms to Work for in the U.S. — and then picks the 10 Best Firms for Women from among those organizations, based on the responses of female staff members to a comprehensive employee survey, as well as other criteria. MCB ranked #4 on this national top 10 Best Firms for Women list in 2020. We are also proud to be selected as one of Accounting Today’s 2024 Regional Leaders. Accounting Today surveys Accounting and Tax firms from all over the country and then dug deep into the responses. For the past 2 years, we have been featured in the Virginia Living Magazine “Best of Virginia” Readers’ Survey as one of the top 3 accounting firms in the Northern Virginia area. We have been listed as an IPA Top 300 Firm, and we consistently make the Washington Business Journal’s Book of Lists.  If you like what you see here, join the MCB family.
